Abriendo Mentes Photo Gallery
A collection of pictures from Abriendo Mentes, a nonprofit education and volunteer program in Potrero, Guanacaste, Costa Rica, with the goal to equip each community member with the knowledge and resources needed to achieve a better standard of living and promote economic stability.
Community event: Beach clean up
As a community event, Abriendo Mentes took the students for an environmentally educational beach clean up at the beach of Potrero, Guanacasta, Costa Rica. The children had fun in the sun while making the beach look beautiful again!
Josue Julian took to Lacrosse!
Nonprofit organization Lacrosse the Nations came on a visit to Potrero to teach the Abriendo Mentes students and other interested children how to play the game of lacrosse. We had so much fun on the field and the kids loved lacrosse.
Study buddy
Abriendo Mentes 5th grader Verenice is helping kinder student Madison making a dinosaur, our crafting project for the letter 'D'. The kids dug out the pasta pennes bones for the dinosaurs themselves!
Encountering the Maleku Indian tribe
On a field trip to Lake Arenal, the Abriendo Mentes 3rd, 4th and 5th graders were given an extraordinary guided tour with Maleku Indian Miguel. Thanks to Bahia del Sol for the transportation and Eco-Lodge for the tour!
Mardi Gras Parade
At this year Mardi Gras Parade, Bahia del Sol graciously donated a float for Abriendo Mentes to decorate and ride! The kids were full of excitement and happiness.

In a fun arts and craft class, the Abriendo Mentes kids made these amazing decorations for the Mardi Gras float!
Optical Illusions!
The Abriendo Mentes 5th and 6th graders had a fun English Class learning about optical illusions. Can you really trust your eyes?
Potrero Women making their own beauty products
Abriendo mentes volunteer Sarah taught the women's empowerment group how to make their own beauty products out of things you can find in your own kitchen.
Pen pals meet
We at Abriendo Mentes had a very special visit all the way from Massachusetts! Particularly special was the two pen pals visiting, Sydney and Samantha, who had fun on the field with AM students Nayelli and Cindy! Hope to see you again, chicas!
Group photo
After the successful Abriendo Mentes beach cleanup Bahia del Sol generously provided juice for everyone. After having our nicely cold drinks we gathered on the lawn for a group photo!
Tope de caballitos
The annual Potrero tope de ninos was sponsored by Abriendo Mentes! A bunch of excited kids from the area started off on a tour round the plaza lead by AM volunteers Shannon and Olivia.

The Legend of the Phoenix - La Leyenda del Fenix
Abriendo Mentes volunteer Jean came down to Potrero with her husband Al and set up an entire play in only two weeks! The 5th and 6th graders got the roles of directors for the younger kids to whom they delegated the different roles of the play. With the help and input from Jean, the kids managed to make props and learn lines and cues for the grand premiere to which parents were invited to come and attend.

One of Abriendo Mentes many star students Cindy had one of the three lead roles as the old Phoenix, here crouching down in her nest built by all the helper birds.
Field trip to the rainforest
It was an awesome experience for the Abriendo Mentes students to go to the rainforest by Lake Arenal and experience a climate completely different to that of Potrero, and only three hours away!
Miguel's House
Another great experience on the Lake Arenal field trip was visiting tour guide Miguel's house in the rainforest. The AM students were taken aback to know that Miguel lives there!
