My time volunteer teaching with Abriendo Mentes
Volunteer teaching for Abriendo Mentes has been both an incredible and formidable experience. The children here need many of the resources that kids in the US take for granted. But every day I see so many kids who brighten when they walk into our classes. I have fallen in love with all of them, watching each kid grow a little bit more every day. They differ from an American child in the sense that their critical thinking skills and creativity have not been nurtured. I immediately noticed that they desired positive affirmation, love, and one-on-one teaching. The mothers of the students have told us of the immense progress the kids have made in just 9 months; beyond the abilities and expectations of their traditional public school. I am so impressed with how dedicated Meradith and Drew are to the Abriendo Mentes Project.
Meradith and Drew have done everything they can do make sure I have the best possible accommodations and a positive experience in Costa Rica. I love living in Potrero, using mornings for going to the beach or other outdoor activities, before lesson planning and teaching in the afternoon. The more teachers that volunteer, the more individually tailored each child’s learning experience can be, so everything has been very hands-on. Also, Costa Rica is beautiful! I would definitely recommend volunteer teaching for Abriendo Mentes for anyone who is interested in trying to teach abroad, or simply making a small but meaningful difference in someone’s life. This is my first time volunteering abroad, and already I can’t wait to come back someday soon!
