The Abriendo Mentes Project in Playa Potrero

Keeping in line with our goal of working closely and collectively with the community, we use the community center as our space for experiential learning classes and activities.  This setting enables us to offer our program to every community member, in a location which is large and familiar.  We open the doors every afternoon and welcome all for English classes, art projects, and even an occasional tennis or tag football game.

The Abriendo Mentes Playa Potrero Project offers afternoon programs for children, divided according to grade level and age. For these lessons, we emulate the public school English curriculum and complement the lessons with additional enriching activities which are essential to stimulate developing minds. We work to provide a motivating afternoon environment for the children to enjoy and engage in activities which are fun, safe and educational.

We also offer an evening adult ESL program that focuses on increasing job competitiveness in the labor market. English language instruction is tailored to specific groups of students to emphasize particular skills and vocabulary that is needed to increase employee effectiveness in a specific occupation. These lessons enable the adult students to hone their knowledge of the English language, which opens up job opportunities and increased freedom of occupation choice.

As Abriendo Mentes grows, we hope to expand the programs by offering additional classes, extending class hours, as well as implementing technology instruction.
