POSITION DESCRIPTION
Abriendo Mentes is a nonprofit organization that empowers communities through education and community development initiatives. Operating in Playa Potrero and Brasilito, Abriendo Mentes offers affordable and accessible English classes focused on tourism and customer service to the adult population. We are looking to contract an experienced English teacher(s) as an Independent Contractor(s) to implement conversational adult English classes in the communities of Potrero and Brasilito.
The Adult English Teacher is responsible for planning and implementing beginner level conversational English classes for adults in Brasilito and/or Potrero, Costa Rica. Class plans will be based on the Abriendo Mentes English curriculum and the teacher is responsible for adapting the curriculum to focus on conversational English for tourism and customer service. The teaching methodology will focus on Classes are taught 2x/week in the evenings (6-8pm) and weekend mornings (schedule tbd). The Adult English Teacher is also responsible for tracking student attendance, communicating with students about homework and class schedule and tracking their progress through exams and other metrics and communicating the information to the Abriendo Mentes coordinator.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
- Plan and implement conversational adult English classes following the class schedule established by Abriendo Mentes
- Create lesson plans according to the teaching methodology of Abriendo Mentes, including the use of games, experiential and participative learning
- Create lesson plans and adapt Abriendo Mentes English curriculum to focus on tourism and customer service
- Track student attendance and notify students of any class schedule changes (via WhatsApp)
- Track student progress and share with the Abriendo Mentes coordinator
- Carry out English evaluations once per session
- Maintain clean and well-organized classroom space
- Track class materials and notify Abriendo Mentes Coordinator of any additional resources needed
REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to be compassionate, patient and understanding while working with students from all education and economic backgrounds
- Professional English teaching degree or ESL Certified or ESL teaching experience (6 months +)
- Experience in creating lesson plans
- Advanced, fluent or Native Spanish speaker
- Commitment of at least 6 months
- Commitment to upholding the mission of Abriendo Mentes
- Ability to travel to Potrero and Brasilito if residing outside of the area
